Needles are used for a variety of purposes in the medical setting, but in most cases they are used to inject a chemical directly into a patient’s bloodstream, delivering medicine, anesthesia, or vital nutrients through an IV system. Because needles come in direct contact with your blood, they may transmit bacteria or disease if they are not handled correctly. Contaminated needles have the potential to spread infections blood-borne diseases that may have a profoundly negative effect on the patient’s life, so it is absolutely imperative for these medical items to be completely sterilized before use.
